Meshmixer is a “mesh swiss army knife” 3D modeling and 3D printing app that I started during my PhD in 2009. I had a SIGGRAPH Talk about it in 2010, after which I released my tech demo as “a free tool for making crazy-ass 3D stuff without too much hassle”. Shortly afterwards, Meshmixer was acquired by Autodesk in 2011.
I joined Autodesk Research and lead development of Meshmixer as a free tool (never a “real” Autodesk product) until 2016. During this time it was downloaded millions of times, and had a userbase ranging from kids to rocket scientists and brain surgeons.
Although Autodesk shut down active Meshmixer development in 2017, and tried to “disappear” the free app multiple times, it still lives due to high user demand (!!). Currently you can download the “official” Win64 version here (account required, booo!!).
Or check out meshmixer.org, an independent “fan site” that (somehow) has Win64 and OSX versions available.
The full story of Meshmixer has yet to be written. In the meantime, here is a picture of Hillary Clinton looking at a thing designed in Meshmixer! For brain surgery!!
